Perhaps the last rubber light railway of Sumatra is still in use
near Kisaran (south of Medan) in North Sumatra. There are
still two daily trains on 700 mm to collect the natural rubber
from the plantations, leaving the factory between 12 and 1 p.m.
and returning four ours later. Still in use is also the 1067 mm
connection with the state railway PTKA.
Reception at the head office in the town of Kisaran was
very, very friendly, and the permission for taking pictures
free granted. Parts of the plantations had been converted
to palm oil and are served by means of trucks.
I had been visiting the factory on 4th August 2008 and found
the following locomotives :
In use : 9 (Ruston Hornsby 425331), 11A (Schoema 4872),
15 (Schoema 4713) and the 1067 mm Loco 16 (Schoema 4950)
Out of use : 12 (Diema 4140) Overhaul : 14 (Schoema 4438)
